The Department of Physics was established on the 17th December 1980. In the year 1981, 34 students were admitted into class XI of Higher Secondary Course in Science under the aegis of West Bengal Council for Higher Secondary Education while six nos of students were admitted into B.Sc. 1st year class affiliated to the University of Burdwan having Physics as one of the subjects. The laboratory in the department in those days was equipped with the Instruments/Apparatus in need. Subsequently, the Honours course of Physics has been introduced in the Dept. in September 1990 with three students out of 10 seats (allotted by the University of Burdwan). The lessons had been imparted both theoretical and practical by three Full-time teachers and one Lab Instructor since then. Nowadays, the student strength stands as 69(Hons) and 163(general) in B.Sc. Course. Presently there are five laboratories and those are equipped with 80 sets of experiments along with two Advanced Optical Bench, one Laser source, two Cathode Ray Oscilloscopes, and three  Spectrometers as prescribed by the respective Boards of studies, University of Burdwan.
