Welcome to Rabindra Mahavidyalaya

Champadanga, an affluent village of Tarakeswar block in the Hooghly district, is a very famous hub of good trade and commerce. Old Benaras Road (Auhalyabai Road) passes through Champadanga. It is about 20 km east of Arambag and 8 kilometres west of Tarakeswar. The place is well-connected to Kolkata and Howrah through bus-routes and railways.

From very early on, Champadanga had a steady economy based on the opulent vegetation of the area. But sadly for the local people, they missed out on higher educational opportunities. Fortunately, it was in 1961 and on the memorable birth-centenary of Rabindranath Tagore that a group of social workers, businessmen and educationists of the locality decided to set up a Degree College with a dream of bringing higher education to the doors of the locals. For this purpose, they formed a Preparatory Committee with the following members - Prasad Chandra Mandal (President), Nityananda Adhikari (Secretary up to 04.11.1971), Prof. Amarendranath Adak (Secretary on and from 05.11.1971), Nandalal Dutta, Panchkari Pal, Prankrishna Mondal, Baidyanath Dutta, Sukdeb Dutta, Amiya Kumar Gupta, Ajit Kumar Maji, Sk. Answar Ali Middya, Santimohan Roy, Ramsingha Pal, Ramen Maitra, Lalitmohan Hazra, Sk. B.J.Naskar, Sk. Goni Middya and Kashinath Mondal.

From then on, it took a few years to select a suitable place for erecting the college building. At that time, Late Netai Charan Hazra and his wife Late Phelubala Hazra jointly donated a princely sum of Rs/. 20,000 along with a plot of 307 ‘Sataks’ of land by the eastside of the Old Benaras Road, about 1.5 km. away from Champadanga bus stop. A great number of local persons from different strata of society also came forward with their invaluable donations and timely help. A two-storied building on the northern side of the big pond of the donated area was built under the supervision of the Preparatory Committee. Finally, our college ‘Rabindra Mahavidyalaya’, affiliated to the University of Burdwan officially started its journey on and from 8th November 1971. We heartily remember all those founder fathers, social workers, educationists, businessmen, and a host of ...

Our college caters to the development of teachers and students and aims for continual up gradation from all spheres. As procedural measures, our college undergoes Academic Audit conducted by our affiliating University (University of Burdwan). While vouching for accountability we undertake the measures suggested by the academic auditors and put sincere efforts to bridge the academic lacunae. Being a Government aided college of rural area with students comprising of weak financial background, we assist our students to obtain Government and non Government scholarships (NSP, SVMCM, Kanyasree, Jindal etc) for pursuing their academic studies. Participation of faculty members in seminars and workshops that enhances their academic and professional capacities is strongly encouraged by the authority. In present times, collaboration and outreach forms an integral part of institutional development where more than one organization holds hand in hand and builds up an interconnected coordinated structure that imparts developmental support to all stakeholders of the participating organization. Apart from inter-collaboration, intra collaboration across departments also provides academic compensation. Outreach programmes with the outer community pertaining to different cross cutting issues of gender sensitization, societal issues, and environmental matters as defined to be as quality initiatives and conducted by departments, different sub committees and units also add to the academic excellence of the college at a large.

Apart from providing a healthy academic atmosphere, our college makes efforts and arrangements that nurture the cultural aptitude of students. Our college organizes different programmes like birth centenaries of Tagore, Vidyasagar, Rammohon etc, and different programmes marking the onset of seasonal beauty like Basanto Utsab. These programmes not only promote intra and inter departmental connectivity but also aims to promote inclusivity among the neighbourhood where nearby schools are allowed to participate in different events. Sports have been an area of our institutional excellence as our students have earned reputation at different levels ranging from university to national and international areas. The Publication Sub Committee of the college takes up initiatives in publishing magazines ‘Charaibeti’ that showcases the creative talents of students. Different awareness programmes organized by departments, different cells such as Womens’ Cell, Wellness Cell, Heritage Club, and Units such as NCC, NSS, and Green Sub –Committee etc try to add to the students’ holistic development beyond the academic periphery. Regular feedback obtained from different stake holders is counted as a measure to map the progress and limitations of the college. Our college has taken measurable initiatives in promoting placement related matters over the years. The placement cell of our college has organized various training programmes while collaborating with other training institutes and successfully placed our students in recent years. ‘Rabindra Mahavidyalaya Alumni Association’ formed way back in 2006 had a clear mission to follow the motto of ‘Reconnection’. As effective ambassadors, a strong Alumni Association with its network is believed to attract prospective students, faculty and donors which altogether contribute to the overall success of the institution.

Our college pledges to provide good governance to all its stakeholders. Accordingly, our college has set up all statutory regulatory cells and units as per the instructions and guidelines of UGC. RTI Cell takes up any request from Indian citizens for institutional information. Due care is taken so that a delicate balanced is maintained in a demographic system where institutional information remains transparent and accessible in the public domain. College has a dedicated Grievance Redressal Cell and that keeps a track on all sorts of grievances and complaints and tries to readily address to the concern and sought out the matter of the aggrieved with urgency. Anti Ragging Cell of our college is entrusted with the task of bringing to book any offender who tries to bully or torture any other stakeholders in terms of physical harassment or mental torture. Internal Complaints Committee takes note of women related issues pertaining to sexual harassment among staff. A robust system is thus created for easy and smooth functioning of institutional affairs involving the underprivileged and socially weak as a way of maintaining balance and parity.

Our college aims to emerge as an educational institution with a commitment to service its neighbouring community and add to its overall welfare. The Green Sub Committee of our College works as a nodal front for maintaining ecological balance and undertakes various meaningful works through its subunits like Nature Club, Waste Management Unit, E-Waste Unit and Restoration and Recycling Unit that function under its aegis. The ground water recharging, vermicomposting pit, mangrove plantation patch, medicinal plant garden, water and waste management unit, dragon fruit garden are manifest sign posts of the overall efforts put in by the Committee for the sake of Green ethics as part of environmental imperatives. NCC enrolment takes place in regular manner. A qualified ANO from the teaching staff is in charge of the cadets who participate in regular parades, drills and feature themselves in National Day celebrations such as Independence Day, Republic Day and Netaji’s Birthday. Cadets take part in national level camps and earn laurels. Following the Gandhian Model, NSS Units with dedicated programme officers carry out community and institutional services. Our NSS looks forward to more future opportunities for meaningful collaboration as a way of widening the scope of service to others as a motto. Sports are now an integral part of NEP curricula and hence the ‘Physical Education’ department of our college is renamed to ‘Physical Education and Sports’ by our affiliating University. To incentivize sporting prowess, college subsidizes the admission fees of entitled students. Apart from providing appropriate job-oriented training programmes to in house students, placement cell also aims to extend its services and provide awareness and training programmes to entitled youths of its neighbouring locality also. Women’s Cell of our college works as an effective agency in addressing concerns and issues pertaining to Women’s growth and development. The cell organizes programmes dealing in women empowerment, financial literacy, health and hygiene, social awareness etc. The Cell continues to thrive hard to overcome societal prejudices and disparities that still create unwanted discriminations and divisions among the two predominant genders. Besides, our college has an in-house health unit run by a qualified doctor. The health unit in collaboration with outer agencies organizes health checkup camps, blood donation camps etc and tries to serve its neighbouring community. The importance of preserving mental well being of the youngsters now forms an inherent part of any educational institution. The Wellness Cell of our college aims to provide an inclusive environment where all young minds can blossom to their fullest. The cell organizes motivational seminars and workshops on mental healing. Psychological counseling by qualified counselling counsellors is arranged for students completely free of cost and by maintaining all specified guidelines of privacy.
