Department of Political Science
History
Political Science, an important branch of Social Science, was introduced in this college as a General subject in 1972 (IC/AFF(P)/48/614/72, dated 22.12.1972). To meet the growing demand among students, the Honours course was introduced in the academic session 2004–2005 (IC/Affin/P/48/144, dated 10.08.2004). Initially, the department started with a small number of students, but over the years it has expanded considerably. At present, a significant number of students are enrolled in both Major and Minor courses in Political Science.
Faculty
The department currently has two full-time teachers and three State-Aided College Teachers (SACTs), who are actively engaged in teaching, mentoring, and academic development of the students.
Academic Performance
Despite the shortage of teaching staff, the department has consistently achieved commendable academic results. A remarkable 100% pass rate was recorded in the academic sessions 2020–21, 2021–22, 2022–23, and 2023–24. In 2024–25, nearly 70% of the students successfully cleared their final examinations with satisfactory academic performance.
Co-curricular and Extra-curricular Activities
Students of the department actively participate in various co-curricular and extra-curricular activities. They enthusiastically take part in quiz competitions organized on the occasion of National Voters' Day and have participated in Youth Parliament and quiz competitions over the past few years. The department also organizes student seminars, debates, group discussions, and awareness programmes on contemporary political and social issues, which help develop students' analytical and communication skills.
Counselling and Monitoring
The department has recently introduced a counselling and monitoring system to provide academic guidance and personal support to students. Both teachers and students have shown keen interest in this initiative, which has contributed positively to the overall learning environment.
Remedial Coaching
To support slow learners and academically disadvantaged students, the department regularly conducts remedial coaching classes. These classes aim to strengthen students' conceptual understanding, improve examination performance, and reduce learning gaps.
